What is Delta 8 THC?

Updated January 6, 2021

If you are reading this, then chances are that you are a fan of cannabis, but have you heard of the latest THC cannabis product sweeping the community? Delta 8 THC is one of the latest and greatest discoveries to come out of intensive cannabis research and might have a serious future in both the medical and recreational fields.

What is Delta 8 THC?

Delta 8 THC in Raw Form

The technical name for THC (you know, the thing that intoxicates you when you consume certain variations of cannabis) is Tetrahydrocannabinol. The Tetrahydrocannabinol found in a cannabinoid like weed is Delta 9 THC. Still, due to its highly psychoactive nature, it remains illegal in most states nationwide. While small amounts of that cannabinoid can be found in full-spectrum CBD, the percentage must stay under a .3% threshold to remain legal. Enter Delta 8 THC.

While Delta 8 THC may share "THC" with its legally questionable counterpart Delta 9, it has an entirely different chemical that creates a wholly unique set of effects along with less potency. Though Delta 8 is less abundantly found in cannabis plants than delta 9 THC, selective breeding and molecular isolation are methods used to extract this unique concentration.

What are the effects of Delta 8?

Delta 8 THC Chemical Structure

A common complaint when users try CBD for the first time is that they feel little to no effect from the consumption, especially compared to Delta 9 THC (or weed). We have to warn you; Delta 8 is by no means CBD. Though its effects might be similar to that of Delta 9, you can expect less headiness and a milder psychoactive sensation when consuming Delta 8, making it tremendously more bearable to the average person.

Although every person is different, most of our customers describe Delta 8 as an uplifting feeling with a relaxing body sensation and a tremendous sense of euphoria. We strongly recommend assessing your personal ability to handle Delta 8 THC by consuming small samples first to get a general feeling for the cannabinoid before consuming large quantities.

Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to discuss the benefits that have been found from Delta 8 consumption, but we encourage you to research as even the National Cancer Institute Drug Dictionary recognizes that delta-8-THC has multiple promising medical effects. We also recommend you read Trulieve’s excellent piece on the benefits of using Delta 8.

Review from Morenike - These are amazing.

I recently learned about delta 8 and began doing some research. I stumbled upon an article hometown heroes wrote on the legality of delta 8. I immediately wanted to try and saw that they also carried various products. These gummies are wonderful. One gummy for me is quite strong, thoroughly enjoyed the sensations and relief. Will definitely be ordering more!

Review from Will Phillip - A pleasant surprise...

My first experience with Hometown Hero Raygun was a pleasant surprise in many delightful ways. I was unaware of Delta8, learning it was available quite by accident. Knowing the quality of H.H. CBD products I went there first. I was both grateful and reassured by the extensive information given for every product available. The product showed up a full day sooner than I expected and just as I was in the throes of the symptoms of my chronic health issues. I sat down and gave it a go. The taste was pleasant and natural, the product was a joy to handle and prepare for use. The relief I gained as result was as effective as medical Cannabis, something the CBD never accomplished for me. Overall it was simply amazing and I am an instant return customer.

Science of Delta 8

The National Cancer Institute Defines Delta 8 as:

An analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC) binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system; CB1 receptor activation inhibits adenyl cyclase, increases mitogen-activated protein kinase activities, modulates several potassium channel conductances, and inhibits N- and P/Q-type Ca2+ channels. This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary form of THC found in cannabis.

For those of you without a master’s in chemistry, what that means is that Delta 8 THC is only a few atomic bonds different than that of Delta 9 THC, just with less generally less potency.

Delta 8 THC in the lab

In 1974, a group of researchers tested a trio of different cannabinoids (Delta 9 THC, Delta 8 THC, and CBD) on mice to prove that THC did harm the immune system in mammals, with shocking results that we encourage you to take a look at. Research showed that Delta 8 THC caused no harm to the immune system. Instead, the study showed that the cannabinoid could potentially have some unique medical benefits. All research on Delta 8 is still very new and not definitive as science further explores this compound.

With cannabis regulations changing nationwide what seems like weekly at this point, more doors are opening for more in-depth research into all sorts of cannabis variations, including, of course, Delta 8 THC. Many studies point to cannabis being a game-changer for the whole medical industry, but time will tell as we continue to increase our knowledge of this miracle plant.

We are always here to help! We encourage you to reach out to us with any suggestions, questions, comments, or concerns via our customer service line or any of our social media accounts, @HometownHeroCBD! We have experts standing by!
