If you are reading this article, chances are that you are a fan of cannabis, but have you heard of this new THC cannabis product sweeping the nation? Delta 8 is one of the latest and greatest discoveries to come out of cannabis research and might have a serious future in the medical field.
What is Delta 8?
The National Cancer Institute Defines Delta 8 as:
An analog of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC) binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system; CB1 receptor activation inhibits adenyl cyclase, increases mitogen-activated protein kinase activities, modulates several potassium channel conductances and inhibits N- and P/Q-type Ca2+ channels. This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9-THC), the primary form of THC found in cannabis.
And for those of you without a master's in chemistry, I’m gonna explain it in lamens terms! The technical name for THC (you know, the thing that intoxicates you when you consume cannabis) is Delta 9 Tetrahydrocannabinol, and it has a sister. Delta 9’s sister compound, Delta 8 is created with a slight shift in one chemical bond that then creates an entirely unique profile that has puzzled the medical marijuana industry over the past few years. Though Delta 8 is less abundantly found in cannabis plants compared to its sister, selective breeding and molecular isolation are some methods used to extract this miracle concentrate.
What are the effects of Delta 8?
We have to warn you, Delta 8 is by no means CBD, if anything its effects are closer to its sister compound Delta 9, or marijuana. When you consume CBD with THC content under .3%, you do not see any psychoactive effects (or the high), the same cannot be said about Delta 8. Although every person is different, we can say that there are psychoactive effects that do cause a certain high after consuming Delta 8. We recommend you safely test the effects of Delta 8 on your own body before more intensive uses.
What are the benefits of Delta 8?
Unfortunately, we are not at liberty to discuss the uses that have been found for Delta 8 but we encourage you to do the research as even the National Cancer Institute Drug Dictionary recognizes that delta-8-THC has multiple promising effects. We also recommend you read Trulieve’s great piece on the benefits of using Delta 8.
