A Brief History of Hemp
During the colonial era, hemp was one of the highest valued crops because of its versatility and strength. This plant was grown for decades, up until the prohibition of marijuana, dragging hemp right with it.
Hemp production was put on pause for years, but then it happened—the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill.
This bill was a huge stepping stone for farmers and the cannabis community because it federally legalized hemp cultivation and the distribution of hemp products.
Still, many companies are coming to the surface to make their own line of commercialized hemp products, which has forced the question, “What can you make out of hemp?”
Hemp can be helpful for many things, but in terms of industrial use—it happens to be a valuable material for building homes, furniture, and other tools.
Hemp fibers are not only durable and strong, they are also resistant to mold, which makes the use of this material highly efficient for manufacturing rope for all kinds of purposes. Some will include:
- Obstacle courses
- Weight loading
In comparison to the other fibers used for making ropes, hemp is far superior because it’s durable, flexible, and most importantly, environmentally friendly.
Since this fabric is biodegradable and comes from a natural renewable source, hemp has and will continue to be useful for all sorts of activities.
Hemp plastic is revolutionary because it can do everything conventional plastic can do. But what is it?
Hemp bioplastic is made from cellulose and lipids located in the stalk and seeds of hemp. These materials will then be made into a biodegradable polymer that creates a hemp-based plastic.
Unfortunately, these plastics are still a rarity, even though it is far more sustainable and durable than the average plastic we use.
Hemp insulation is way safer and environmentally friendly than the other insulation we commonly use today.
For example, standard insulation can have dangerous chemicals, whereas hemp insulation is made from plant-based biomass that ensures your air is not tainted with any harmful substances.
The downside of hemp insulation is the cost. But if you’re looking to have a hypoallergenic and sustainable home, it may be worth the price.
Hemp wood is hardwood made from hemp-based plant material developed by reverse-engineering hemp’s growth cycle to create a wooden material that offers builders a dense and stable wood for interior building, flooring, and furniture.
Planes and Cars
Wait, did we just add a section of planes and cars—made out of hemp?
Of course! But this is old news.
The First Car Made From Hemp
In 1941, Henry Ford created a hemp-fueled car built from cellulose plastic. After testing, they found that this material was tougher than steel, and to put it to the test, they attempted to damage it with a hammer, but it didn’t even budge.
Hemp biodiesel is made from hemp seed oil that can be used for engines. Through a process called cellulolysis, companies can convert hemp into ethanol by chemically heating the plant to create cellulose. This will then be broken down into sugars, which will be fermented into ethanol. After ethanol is purified and distilled, it will become biodiesel.
There is still research being done, but the studies show promise. Who knows, maybe in twenty years, we will be driving with biodiesel, but only time will tell.
A Canadian company has created the first plane made and fueled of products from hemp. The entire build took years to develop, but the final product resulted in an aircraft built almost entirely from hemp materials, including the seats, wings, and plane walls.
This project has inspired others to revolutionize different objects, such as boats, aircraft, and cars.
We can only hope that more manufacturers will take this environmentally friendly approach as we move towards the future.
Food and Drinks
Hemp has been consumed as a food item for thousands of years, so there is no surprise that the hemp industry is booming in the sector of consumable hemp-derived foods and drinks.
Hemp Seed Butter
There is nothing more wholesome than an old-fashioned peanut butter sandwich, except let’s switch out the PB with hemp seed butter.
Like other nut spreads, hemp seed butter is made from ground hemp seeds that offer different nutritional benefits, such as omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants.

Hemp flour is made by taking hemp seeds and removing their oil. From there, you will be provided with a flour substitute for baking and cooking that is naturally gluten-free. Since it is GF, it won’t have any rising agents, so make sure to plan your recipe accordingly.
Hemp protein powder is widely used by consumers on a vegetarian diet or are lactose intolerant. This powder is ideal for those looking to add more protein to their routine, without having to deal with dairy, whey, or other products that can negatively affect the digestive system for those on diets who cannot have such items.

Beauty products made with all-natural materials are hard to come by, but some companies have taken it upon themselves to produce makeup that looks just as good as the ingredients they use.
To all our makeup lovers, some companies have taken mascara and infused it with hemp seed oil.
This type of mascara has a higher price tag, but it’s well worth the benefits of lash nourishment, growth, and overall definition. Instead of clumping up your lashes with chemical-filled mascara, you can use this all-natural version that has been reported to improve and lengthen all hair types.
Lipstick is a classic makeup choice, but based on some of the ingredients they use—there is no wonder why many are left with chapped lips.
Hemp lipstick visibly brightens your lips while keeping them soft and nourished. With similar prices as other brands, there is no reason why you shouldn’t switch up your makeup routine with a hemp product that will undoubtedly leave you feeling at your best.

If you have outdoor pets, keeping them warm in the winter can be a difficult obstacle to overcome. During this season, many farmers and owners turn to straw or hemp bedding. Hemp bedding is absorbent, stays fresh longer, and contains low dust.
Some pet owners may find that straw or pine affect their allergies. In this case, hemp bedding might be an excellent alternative. If that’s the case, this winter, keep your furry friends warm hemp bedding instead.
Collars and Leashes
Training your puppy or dog not to bite on the leash can be a never-ending battle. After a while, you find it easier to watch the leash fall apart than having to pull it out of their mouth each time.

Clothing and Other Materials
We could all use material that fits our skin and feels comfortable without breaking the bank. Let’s look at some of the best selling hemp products in the clothing and materials industry.
Shirts and Jeans
Big brands have started experimenting with using hemp materials, with some finding success. Most hemp shirts and tops are made with hemp and cotton to ensure that the shirt is durable, breathable, and soft.
Hemp jeans are not as popular as shirts, but that doesn’t mean they won’t become a huge hit down the road. Some major brands have begun producing hemp jeans with cotton materials to ensure they have the same feel as their other clothing lines.
Hemp fabric is proven to be more breathable and lightweight, making it ideal for producing blankets that keep you warm while not being too heavy. So if you’re looking for a bedspread that doesn’t make you sweat, a hemp blanket will be your new best friend.
