Natural Delta 8: 2021 Guide with Everything You Need to Know

Natural Delta-8 Image

There's a lot of buzz going around about Delta-8.

It's a type of THC that's legal in many states, but many skeptics say it's a "man-made" cannabinoid.

At Hometown Hero, we only use Delta-8 in its natural form, derived from the hemp plant itself.

And in this blog post, we're going to teach you all about naturally derived Delta-8!

We're going to cover:

Let's go.

Naturally Occurring Delta-8 THC

To simply put it, Delta-8 is a naturally occurring cannabinoid found in both hemp and marijuana in small amounts.

No, it's not a new cannabinoid and it wasn't something invented by humans.

In fact, if someone has used marijuana or hemp, they have already tried a small amount of Delta-8.

Cannabis has been around for about 28 million years. So it's safe to say that Delta-8 THC has been around for that long, give or take.

We’ve known about Delta-8 for decades. In 1974, the National Cancer Institute tested the effects of D8 on mice.

Now, there is such a thing as lab-created Delta-8. However, we're going to first talk about how to extract it naturally.

CO2 Extraction For Delta-8

CO2 Tanks for natural delta 8 extraction

There are several ways you can get naturally derived Delta-8 THC from hemp.

We're going to start off and focus on a method called CO2 extraction.

Why?

Because it's the way we get our Delta-8 at Hometown Hero.

And do you want to know a cool fact about it?

It's the same technique used for making decaf coffee.

Let's begin.

The Process

First, you have an extraction vessel. It's a metal chamber where the hemp is first placed, and the process begins.

Then, beverage-grade liquid CO2 gets pumped into the extraction vessel.

Pressure and heat builds-up in the extraction vessel. It reaches such a point in which the CO2 converts from liquid to a supercritical fluid.

"Wait a second, hold on. What's a supercritical fluid?"

Great question!

You're familiar with H2O, right? It comes in many different forms:

  • Ice - solid
  • Water - liquid
  • Vapor/steam - gas

We all know how temperature affects H2O. For example, if you heat some ice, it will eventually become water, and when it gets hotter, that water becomes steam.

Pressure also affects the state of matter. For example, we all know that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius/212 degrees Fahrenheit.

These boiling points are at standard atmospheric pressure, aka Earth's atmospheric pressure at sea level.

The higher the elevation, the lower the boiling point because there is less pressure. In Denver, Colorado, for example, water boils at 95 degrees Celsius/203 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s great for saving a few cents while using a coffee maker (possibly decaf).

A supercritical fluid is a substance that has reached a point of extreme pressure and extreme heat where the liquid and gas phases no longer occur. However, it's not enough pressure to compress it into a solid.

This creates a state of matter that has properties of liquids and gases.

Supercritical Fluid Chart Graph

The supercritical CO2 saturates the hemp and lifts Delta-8 THC from it.

After that, a flow opens, leading the supercritical CO2 and the Delta-8 it's carrying from the extraction vessel into the separation vessel.

In the separation vessel, the CO2, free from the pressure, converts into a gas. As a result, the hemp extracts fall to the bottom of the vessel.

Afterward, the CO2 moves into a cooling tower, where it gets converted into a liquid, where it can be used again.

Or, if they felt like it, they could just keep it as gas and use it to carbonate their favorite drinks. After all, it is beverage-grade CO2, which is at least 99.9% pure.

So basically, highly pressurized CO2 pushes the Delta-8 out of the hemp. This creates a mixture of CO2 and Delta-8, which gets separated when the CO2 turns into a gas.

It’s that simple!

Why CO2?

CO2 Extraction for Coffee

There are several other ways to extract Delta-8 directly from hemp.

So why do we choose Delta-8 extracted with CO2?

CO2 is non-toxic, non-flammable, and it's chemically inert. These qualities ensure safety for both those who are extracting the Delta-8 and for our customers.

CO2 extraction, as mentioned before, is used for making decaf coffee and other consumable items for decades. It's proven and versatile.

Plus, CO2 is considered a "solventless solvent."

"What does that mean?"

A solvent is a liquid used to dissolve something. The solvent has to be removed from the mixture to avoid impurities.

As mentioned before, the CO2 separates itself from the Delta-8 when it turns into a gas, leaving no trace behind.

Now, onto why there's the distinction of "naturally derived Delta-8."

We do not use these types of methods.

Generally, the thing to know is that through chemical processes and industrial-grade equipment, one can turn CBD into Delta-8.

Similar processes can be used to turn Delta-9 into Delta-8.

If we were to explain any of these isomerization processes, we would have to drown you out with a lot of chemistry. There isn’t an effective way to put them into layman’s terms.

However, here are some of the chemicals used in these processes:

  • Heptane
  • Toluene
  • Sodium hydroxide
  • Hydrochloric acid
  • p-Toluenesulfonic acid
  • Petroleum ether
  • Argon

Why would people convert CBD into Delta-8 with these chemicals/methods?

Simply because it helps drive down the price of their products.

Where To Buy Naturally Derived Delta-8 THC

Natural Delta 8 THC Extract by Hemp Leaf

At Hometown Hero, we only use naturally-derived Delta-8 in our products. The method used to obtain this Delta-8 is the CO2 extraction, as mentioned earlier.

As of June 30, 2021, Delta 8 THC is legal in most states. So one of the benefits of hemp-derived Delta-8 THC is that it's federally legal.

Delta-8's federal legality status means that it can be purchased online with credit or debit, and mailed to states where it's legal.

If you're only looking for naturally derived Delta-8 THC products from a business registered with the USPS, with COAs from a DEA certified laboratory, then you're more than welcome to check out our online store.
