Delta-8 or Delta-9: Which Form of THC is Stronger?

Delta-8 or Delta-9: Which Form of THC is Stronger?

Table of Contents

Many considerations go into buying a cannabis product: form, potency, flavor... The matter is only complicated by having to choose between strikingly similar cannabinoids like Delta-8 and Delta-9. One question that prospective consumers frequently ask is, "Which one is stronger?" In this article, we will be breaking down the properties and strengths of both cannabinoids to answer this.

What is THC?

Before we get into each compound, let’s talk about the elephant in the room—what is THC? THC, otherwise known as “tetrahydrocannabinol,” is a compound found in both hemp and marijuana plants (broadly categorized as cannabis).

It isn’t uncommon to hear consumers use the terms THC and Delta-9 interchangeably, but there are actually several variants of THC, and Delta-9 is just one of them.

The four major types of THC in cannabis plants are

  • THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid)
  • THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin)
  • Delta-8 THC (Delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol)
  • Delta-9 THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol)

Now, you may be curious—do all THC variants cause the same effects? Not at all.

Each type of THC has a different chemical formula, which binds to our cannabinoid receptors differently, yielding distinct effects.

Wait, Cannabinoid Receptors?

To understand why THC affects the body, to begin with, let’s cover the Endocannabinoid System (ECS)All humans and animals have this system due to its role in regulating various internal biological functions, including:

  • Learning and memory
  • Growth and development
  • Regulating appetite

The human body naturally produces compounds called “endocannabinoids” to keep the ECS functioning by continuously sending signals throughout the body.

One of the major endocannabinoids is called “anandamide.” Anandamide shares similar chemical properties with THC, which allows this compound to interact with the two main receptors of the ECS (CB1 and CB2)

This causes the THC to alter the brain’s communication between neurons, creating different effects.

However, due to each THC variant being different from the next, they interact with the cannabinoid receptors in their own way.

What is Delta-9 THC?

Delta-9 THC is most commonly associated with marijuana, but it can also be derived from hemp.

This compound got its name from where its chemical bond is placed—on the 9th carbon chain.

The location of the chemical bond plays a major role in the effects that occur, which is why it is common to hear effects such as:

  • Feelings of euphoria
  • Enlightenment
  • Sense of well-being

Keep in mind, however, that because each person's ECS is different, these effects vary.

If Delta-9 were placed on a chart, it would likely be ranked higher on the scale for causing more intense bodily effects. It has been described as providing a deep feeling of relaxation that some describe as "heady."

Another thing to note aside from Delta-9's effects: as of this writing, all hemp-derived products with 0.3% or Delta-9 THC are federally legal and legal in all 50 states.

What is Delta-8 THC?

A few years ago, you probably hadn’t heard of Delta-8 THC. But today, it’s hard not to hear about it.

Delta-8 is one of the most popular forms of hemp-derived THC and can be found in small concentrations in cannabis plants. Unlike hemp-derived Delta-9, Delta-8 THC doesn’t have a concentration limit. The catch is that it's not legal in all 50 states, so check your local laws to find out if it is legal near you.

Beyond legal status, Delta-8 and Delta-9 differ in terms of effects.

Overall, we have found a majority of the cannabis community refers to Delta-8 as a “milder” version of Delta-9, meaning its effects are less heady and more uplifting. However, it’s still THC, so if you don’t know the perfect amount for you, start small to find it.

Does Mixing Delta-8 With Delta-9 Make It Stronger?

You can mix Delta-8 and Delta-9, but it may not be the “ultimate” combination. CBD and THC are often used together because it has been said to offer the Entourage Effect.

This effect occurs when multiple cannabinoids come together and work synergistically, resulting in a broader experience. However, if you’re curious about combining Delta-8 and Delta-9, make sure to check your current state laws and consult a doctor for their medical opinion.

Upon complying with local laws and receiving approval from your doctor, start small.
