What Is the Shelf Life of Delta 8 THC Carts?

Published May 4, 2021

Ever since vaping became popular, more and more people have turned to it as an alternative to traditional smoking. CBD products in cartridge form have taken off, and some people started using vaping as an alternative to smoking hemp products. Now that Delta 8 is gaining in popularity, there are even Delta 8 THC carts on the market.

An important part of using natural products like hemp and cannabinoid products, is learning when they are no longer good or safe for consumption.

Storing Delta 8 Vape Cartridges

Have you ever been looking for something and come across an old Delta 8 cartridge, but you aren’t sure how long it has been there? Luckily, cannabinoids in higher concentrations, like a vape cartridge, are relatively low maintenance. They don’t require a lot of attention like edibles or flower. So there is a good chance that if your cartridge was tucked away in a drawer and is less than a year old, it is still good.

Four main factors cause your Delta 8 THC carts to degrade and lose potency:

  1. Heat can degrade both THC and CBD within a cartridge. It doesn’t have to be direct heat either. The heat from the body from carrying the cartridge can degrade it as well. It is best to keep it in a cool place.
  2. Direct sunlight can cause degradation and molecular changes to THC, resulting in CBN formation, another cannabinoid that has some of the same properties as THC but much more mild. That is why a dark place is recommended for storage.
  3. Oxygen (oxidation) and the fatty acids within the Delta 8 oil can interact. With the heat and sunlight in play, kiss your new cartridge goodbye.
  4. Time is not a factor that can really be quantified in terms of how long it takes for a cart to go bad. As long as it is taken care of and the above factors are minimized, there is a good chance that your cartridge will last longer – or at least long enough for you to use it.

Signs Your Delta 8 Cartridge is No Longer Good

If you aren’t sure if your cartridge is good, you can look at the signs of spoilage – much as you would do with the flower products. Some indicators may let you know it is time to retire your Delta 8 cartridge.

  • Discoloration – As a rule of thumb, most Delta 8 THC vape cartridge oils are clear or a light yellow. If the oil has significantly changed color, throw it away. The darkening of the oil is proof that the Delta 8 within the cartridge has started to break down. While it likely is not harmful to consume, it will likely taste funny and have less potency.
  • Change in consistency – If you notice that your Delta 8 cartridge oil has begun to clump, thicken, or congeal, these are all indicators that your cartridge needs to be thrown away. These do not last indefinitely, so when it gets old and gives you proof, you need to pitch it.
  • Change in taste – Even if your Delta 8 cartridge looks the same way it did when you first bought it, but the first hit doesn’t taste right, or it smells bad, it is a sign that it has gone bad. When your vape cartridge is sour or bitter (definitely not the flavor you purchased), it is time to switch it out for a fresh one.

Enjoying Your Delta 8 THC Vape Cartridge

If you want to enjoy your vaping experience, only the freshest Delta 8 cartridge will do. You should only be purchasing your cartridges from a reputable retailer, one who knows all about Delta 8 and uses third-party testing for all cannabinoids. Being responsible with your Delta 8 vape is also important. Vaping will bring the onset of the effects on more quickly than many other methods of consumption.

Before beginning use of any cannabinoid, make sure you check with your medical provider. Your provider can tell you if trying a cannabinoid like Delta 8 may be beneficial to you. Every person is different, so the outcome may not be what you originally expected, but don’t be discouraged. Many people don’t feel anything the first time they try a Delta 8 cartridge in their vape.

Always use Delta 8 and other cannabinoid products responsibly.
